vessels

This generative video and sound installation was initially inspired by Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project. I was particularly interested in the idea that the 19th century Parisian malls were a kind of early cinema (at least this is how I read it). vessels is set in a wider terrain of New York City that includes train stations, parks, and bus stops. I wasn’t interested in capturing anything dramatic in these candid shots, but simply the everyday behavior of the urban human specimen in its characteristic state of inertia. The multichannel sound operates independently of the image, and has no manipulative narrative function as in the Hollywood film score. Its intention is to stimulate new and personal conceptual associations and feelings that would not be possible with sound or image alone. The combinations of video clips and sound will never repeat. This work was commissioned and exhibited by California State Fullerton University’s Grand Central Art Center where I was an artist-in-residence.
