Sound Field

SF-PAN-4-COMPR

Sixteen silk sunflowers are dyed black, retrofitted with speaker drivers, and arranged randomly on a field of black astroturf near ear level. They are installed in a darkened room and individually lit with narrow spotlights. Each flower emits a different set of sounds derived from sine tones and white noise that is reminiscent of Morse Code. The viewer/listener is invited to stroll through the field and hear different sonic perspectives. Sound Field was originally commissioned by MATA and was conceived as a companion piece to Aviary, and the two works were shown together at the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University under the title Song of Transformation.
